Messages from the Pulpit

ISAIAH CHAPTER 40 VERSES 28 to 31.

Do you not know?

Have you not heard?

The lord is the Everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no-one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar in wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they  will walk and not be faint.

Hebrew Chapter 12 verses 1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witness, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

A recent message from Major M Jones

Major Jones asked and answered the following  questions:

What do we know about Heaven?

It is a miracle we have yet to experience.

It is the eternal abode of God, the uncreated spiritual realm inhabited by Him and his angels.

It is the Believer's hope and eternal home which "eye has not seen, nor ear heard" (1 Corinthians 2:9)

It is a place of love (1 Corinthians 13:12), of rest (Hebrews 4:9), of joy (Luke 15:7) of knowledge (1 Corinthians 13:12), and of perfect harmony (Romans 8:17, Revelation 22:3).

How is it described?

Christ calls it his "Fathers house" (John 14:2)

It is called- paradise (Luke 23:43, 2 Corinthians 12:4, Revelation 2:7)

-The heavenly Jerusalem (Galatians 4:26, Hebrews 12:22, Revelation 3:12)

                   - The kingdom of heaven (Matthew 25:1, James 2:5)

-The eternal kingdom (2 Peter 1:11)

-The eternal inheritance (1 Peter 1:4, Hebrews 9:15)

-The better country (Hebrews 11:14 and 16)

The blessed are said to "sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob" and to be "in Abraham's bosom" (Luke 16:22, Matthew 8:11), to "reign with Christ" (2 Timothy 2:12) and to enjoy "rest" (Hebrews 4:10 and 11)

What will happen there?

In heaven, the blessedness of the righteous consists in the possession of "life everlasting", "an eternal weight of glory" (2Corinthians 4:17), an exemption from all sufferings forever, a deliverance from all evils and the society of the wicked (2 corinthians 5:1 and 2, 2 Timothy 4:18). Bliss without termination and  the "fullness of joy" forever (Luke 20:36, Corinthians 4:16, and 18:1, 1 Peter 1:4 and 5:10, 1 John 3:2).

The believers' heaven is not only a state of everlasting blessedness, but also a 'place', a place "prepared" for them. (Jesus himself tells us this in John 14:2).

From today's service.

Have you ever felt brimming over with thanks and joy?

There's a psalm for that.
Perhaps you feel anxious, afraid, doubtful?
There's a psalm for that too.
If we can't find the right words to express our feelings, the chances are we can find a psalm to do it on our behalf.
Psalms show people being angry and desiring revenge. They show people being real and honest before God. Not only in words of perfect praise. Psalms even give us permission to shout at Him!
I think sometimes there is an expectation that being a Christian means you have to be permanently happy in all kinds of adversity. The psalms can teach us not only how to praise, but also how to express sadness. The real world contains suffering and the psalms contain many songs of lament. These psalms of lament are like written permission from our forebears to question, and give us an outlet for our doubts and griefs. In this kind of psalm we see praise and trust in a God in spite of our difficulties. Trust in God has not made the trouble go away, nor lessened its' hurt. We need to remember this and hold onto it as we find our way through difficult times.

Martin Luther king Jr.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

His struggle for equality in a segregated America will be acknowledged for ever in history.

It is difficult for us to imagine what life must have been like during those years but even today, all over the world there are still people living their lives separately, being treated differently, and being considered as less worthy than another.

King knew that when he preached about equality, he was giving us God's message and he spoke with the authority of the Lord's word.

He knew that his message was the word of God and that the inequality he, and many others witnessed and experienced was definitely not how God wants us to be.

How do we know this?

The bible tells us:-

"There is neither Jew nor Greek,

there is neither slave nor free,

There is no male or female,

For you are all one in Christ Jesus."

Galatians 3:28

The bible uses these three groups, to illustrate its point, but the principal applies more widely than just them.

NO ONE, regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, orientation ability, disability or any other apparent difference is any different to anyone else. Or to put it another way, we are all the same in God's eyes.

 We are all equal.

No matter what 'group' we align ourselves to, we are all in His group, we are all loved by Him equally. And loved so much, that to prove His love, God sent His son, to die for us.

In Matthew 22:37 Jesus tells us "Love your neighbour as you love yourself"

In other words care equally for everyone and treat everyone with the same care and respect, regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, orientation, ability, disability or any other apparent difference.

We are not perfect, we won't always succeed, but let's try.  What a great world this could be if we all try and we will all be a step closer to Martin Luther King's dream of equality.

 Equality for everyone.

Sunday  25th March, our worship was led by Mel McDonagh.

On the way to Jerusalem, many people spread their coats on the road for Jesus. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
They all shouted,
"Praise to the Son of David! Welcome! God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Praise to God in heaven"
Matthew 21:8

Sunday 25th February 2018

The message today was given by Steve Wilmshurst from Bristol.

Bible readings:

Matthew chapter 13 verses 33 to 46.

Isaiah chapter 5 verses 1-7.

Steve made reference to the death this week of the evangelist Mr Billly Graham, who over six decades preached to an estimated 215 million people in 185 countries.

Billy Graham when talking about his own death said:

“Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God”.*

Steve asked the question, if someone asked “Who are you?” How would you define yourself?

Will you be going into the presence of God when you die? Do you define yourself as a Christian?

If you reject Jesus Christ, you will be crushed, broken to pieces. But salvation is available to everyone, through knowing Jesus Christ and being with Jesus Christ.

Define me? I am a Christian, a believer, a follower of Jesus Christ and I will not be dying when the Lord calls me, I will only be changing my address.

Our thanks to Steve for leading our worship and sharing this message.

*Graham paraphrased an earlier Christian writer and evangelist, Dwight L Moody (1900) who is also now “in the presence of God”.

A few words from RC Sproul found on Youtube.

"God is holy, righteous and just. We are not".

"To be a Christian is to be forgiven".

"The gospel is so plain in scripture that a child can understand it".

"When I put my trust in God, He gives me righteousness. So if I die right now, I go to Heaven right now. This is because I have all the righteousness I need to get  there, namely, the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Thats the good news".

RC Sproul went home to the Lord on 14/12/17 (shared by Pastor Funnell of Noddfa baptist church, Abersychan).

Sunday 26/11/17

The message today was God's love for each and every one of us and was given by Mr Wayne Jones.

Wayne reminded us of the magnitude of God's love and how that love is without any conditions, stipulations or demands.

"For God loved the world so much, that He gave His only begotten son, so the whoever believes in Him, will have eternal life".

Sunday 15th October 2017

Our message today was given by Mrs Irene Price and Mr Ed Price.

The theme was about the fruits of the Spirit. These are  attributes that we try to achieve in our Christian life-

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control. (Galatians 5.22-23)

Jesus tells us that the most important of these is Love-

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, all your mind and all your strength" and "love your neighbour as you love yourself" (Mark 12. 29-31)

Our thanks to Ed and Irene.

An easy way of remembering how to pray

You have 5 digits on your hand, use these to help you remember how to pray.

1. When you put your hands together (as if to clap) your thumb is nearest to you, this reminds you to pray for the people nearest and dearest to you.

2. Your index finger is the finger you use to point to Heaven, and this reminds us to pray to God and give thanks for the salvation He provides.

3. Your middle finger is the tallest or highest finger, this reminds us to pray for those in authority, politicians, leaders etc and to ask God to guide them with their decision-making and plans.

4. Your fourth finger is the  finger with little strength and is to remind us to pray for those less fortunate than ourselves.

5. The little finger reminds you to pray for yourself, to ask God for help and guidance and to thank Him for all that you have.

Our thanks to Major Jones for this simple way of remembering how to pray.

Sunday 6th August 2017

Today Mr Mel McDonough reminded us how blessed we are. How we have been given a gift by God without any need to earn or warrant it.

“You have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God”.

Ephesians Chapter 2 verse 8

Grace is the freely given, unmerited favour and love of God .

In spite of our sin, in spite of our recklessness, God still loves us. This is the gift from God.

And all because we believe

Praise the Lord.

Sunday 23rd July 2017

In keeping with the beginning of the school holidays and many people setting off on journeys at this time, Mrs Auriole Bolter reminded us today of the many journeys detailed in the Bible.

She asked us to put ourselves in the shoes of those bible travellers who made long, and dangerous journeys without modern methods of transport.

Many of those travellers were acting under the guidance or instruction of the Lord and she reminded us to listen to the Lord and follow the path that He has provided for us, whilst trusting Him to guide us and care for us as we journey.

Our thanks to Mrs Bolter for her timely message.

Sunday 9th July 2017.

Message from Mr Trevor Matthews of Siloam Baptist Church, Cwmbran.

Have you lost Jesus?

You are not alone.

When Jesus was  a boy, his own parents Mary and Joseph, once lost him,  and spent three days looking for Him.

We too can lose Jesus. in the hustle and bustle of everyday life we can be so busy that He moves further from our mind and our ways.

But, He is nearby waiting for us. We just need to do as His parents did and re-trace our steps to find Him.

Where did they find Him? in the Temple of course and this is where you can find Him.

We are here every Sunday at 11am, call in to find what you have lost.

Alternatively, any church will welcome you as you seek to find Jesus and  put Him at the heart of your life.
